AQ
Antarctica
Description
Antarctica is the southernmost continent, almost entirely covered by a vast ice sheet and centered on the geographic South Pole. It has no permanent population or government; instead it is governed under the Antarctic Treaty System, an international agreement that sets the continent aside for peaceful scientific research and prohibits military activity and mineral exploitation. Dozens of countries operate seasonal and year-round research stations across the continent. The ISO 3166-1 codes for Antarctica (alpha-2 AQ, alpha-3 ATA, numeric 010) are used to designate the region in international data and postal systems.
