Description
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are a remote, uninhabited group of subantarctic volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, administered as an external territory of Australia. The islands are covered largely by glaciers and are home to Australia's only active volcano, Big Ben, on Heard Island. Designated a nature reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, they have no permanent population and are rarely visited, preserving a largely untouched subantarctic ecosystem.
