Montserrat

Description

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean, part of the Lesser Antilles' Leeward Islands, southwest of Antigua. Its capital, Plymouth, was abandoned after the Soufrière Hills volcano began erupting in 1995 and buried much of the town in 1997; the settlement of Brades has since served as the territory's de facto seat of government. Roughly two-thirds of the island remains an exclusion zone due to ongoing volcanic activity. Its ISO 3166-1 codes (alpha-2 MS, alpha-3 MSR, numeric 500) are used in banking, statistics, and travel documentation.
