Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic. Its capital is San Juan, one of the oldest cities founded by Europeans in the Americas, known for the Spanish colonial fortifications of Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Residents of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens, and the territory uses the U.S. dollar.
